Brandon Martin claims to be “for freedom” — but not for a woman’s freedom to choose

(Tucson, A.Z.) – For a candidate who claims the federal government has “stripped away many of our liberties,” Trump-Republican Brandon Martin is committed to limiting the freedom American women have to choose what to do with their bodies.

Brandon Martin does not support a woman’s right to choose. In fact, Brandon Martin has vowed to vote down any bills that would fund Planned Parenthood. He justifies his support for defunding Planned Parenthood by saying that abortion services are “killing the next generation of laborers” and are purposefully aimed at black babies as a “means of population control.” Both of these assertions are false, and he uses them recklessly to further his anti-abortion agenda.

“Brandon Martin’s stance on women’s privacy is quite alarming,” said campaign spokeswoman Arielle Devorah. “Martin’s threat to defund Planned Parenthood will gravely harm millions of women who routinely use Planned Parenthood’s wide variety of other critical health care services, such as cancer screenings. If he is elected, he will take Arizona backwards. Women, including the revolutionary late Justice Ginsburg, have worked too hard and too long for this to happen.”

Martin’s “population control” allegations are especially harrowing in the wake of a whistleblower’s report that women in ICE custody had been subject to forced hysterectomies without their consent. Putting Brandon Martin’s arguments alongside current events show how divorced he is from the American reality — where a dystopian control over women’s bodies is becoming normalized.

“As a mother, grandmother, and most fundamentally as a woman, I know what is at stake if we lose our right to choose and our access to Planned Parenthood,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick. “My stance on this issue is grounded in a woman’s constitutional right to privacy, which includes the freedom to make her own decisions about her health and her body.”
